A MESSAGE FROM KIDSTAR FOUNDER AND VOICE AMERICA KIDS PROGRAM DIRECTOR PERRY DAMONE
This idea came to me when I was reading the latest TIME Magazine (August 5, 2013), the cover story read, “IS YOUR CITY NEXT, LESSONS FROM DETROIT’S FIGHT TO SURVIVE” by Rana Foroohar. I don’t have to tell you about the state of the world and the economic situation that faces our children; this is the world we are leaving them. This includes the bankrupt city of Detroit and the chaos that surrounds us, in fact in this specific article it points to the East side of Detroit which has been especially hit hard and decimated with 80,000 empty homes surrounded by empty businesses, 140 square miles.
I created a new show concept called “SUSTAINABLE LIVING – PROJECT DETROIT.” (Thank you Ray Ellis for your sustainable guidance) This will be the first of many cities that I would like to implement the following program. I would propose having the children of Detroit re-build portions of Detroit with the help of local and national sponsors and mentors.
Thanks to NPR/Michigan Radio’s Asst News Director Sara Hulett, we were introduced to an amazing woman that has been working in the Brightmoor, Michigan area for 7 years and restoring homes and cleaning up the Brightmoor neighborhood, her name is Riet Schumack or as we call her, an “Angel.” So KIDSTAR and Voice America are honing in on Brightmoor as the starting point to rebuilding and restoring the devastated neighborhoods of Detroit and we will begin with helping Riet Schumack in Brightmoor, Michigan. From there we will expand into East Detroit and continue the rebuilding process. We will then move into CantonOhio followed by Chicago, I will keep you updated on those cities. Also you will be able to hear the progress through our kids on www.voiceamericakids.com , and also www.kidstar.org.
We are going to create a VOICE AMERICA/KIDSTAR Radio Show called, “SUSTAINABLE LIVING – PROJECT DETROIT” and we will have kids on the air talking about their experience and the restoration project progress. The kids will be sharing with you on how they are refurbishing the floors, the kitchens, the bedrooms, plumbing, electrical and so on. We will also have the kids, not adults, spearheading the “Project Detroit” a campaign that will bring back businesses in the area and to bring back jobs to the neighborhood. We are not just restoring homes, but restoring communities and making them sustainable. The adults will be there as mentors and assisting our kids in the rebuild project, but the kids will be the ones moving the program forward. We are working on a partnership with returning vets, called “VET STAR.” This is where we will have returning vets working side by side with the rebuild project, putting hammer to nails side by side with our kids.
I will be traveling to Detroit soon and will keep you updated on our progress, as we would like to take this project to other cities across the country as we will have our kids restoring and building for their future through radio.
I would like to thank Voice America, Ray Ellis, my Father, Vic Damone who is sharing this project with Home Depot, Charles Klar (Developer), Sara Hulett (NPR Michigan Public Radio, University of Michigan), Riet Schumack (Neighborhood Hero), Jeff Spenard, David and Brooke Ide for their enthusiasm and fire power that they bring to this project. I would also like to acknowledge the KIDSTAR support team, Bruce Solsten and Cornelius Hanna, this is a massive project and I couldn’t do this without the support of all mentioned above also the amazing sponsors with an amazing vision and of course the city of Detroit.
If you can and would like to help, please contact me, Perry Damone directly at 480-837-1676.
